Dozens of former Republican national security officials are working to form a group that will support Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, in another sign that President Donald Trump has alienated some members of his own party amid growing discontent over his policies, informed sources told Reuters.
Sources said the group will publicly support Biden in the coming weeks, and its members plan to launch a campaign for the former vice president, who faces Trump in the November 3 election.

The plan includes at least 24 officials who served under former Republican presidents Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush Sr. and George W. Bush Jr., the sources said, and dozens of others are being talked about to join.

According to the sources, the group will argue that Trump's continued four more years in office will jeopardize U.S. national security, and that Republicans should view Biden as a better option despite political differences.

According to the individuals concerned, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the initiative is led by John Bellinger III and Ken Weinstein, both senior officials under former President George W. Bush Jr., Bellinger served as legal counsel to the National Security Council and the State Department, and Weinstein was Bush's homeland security adviser and former FBI Director Robert Mueller's office.

"Trump is making friends with dictators, he's a real danger," said one participant in the group, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The group could be announced before the Democratic National Convention in August, which is supposed to formally announce Biden's candidacy for the next U.S. presidential race against Trump, but sources said no date has yet been set for the group's announcement.

Polls show Biden outperforming Trump, and in recent weeks Trump, who has faced little opposition from members of his own party for a second term, has drawn sharp criticism from many retired military leaders and former members of his administration.

The criticism came as he called for a military response to protests in U.S. cities over racism, police brutality and his administration's handling of the Corona epidemic.
